TWO DAY WORKSHOPS

 

Experience level and materials fee are noted for each workshop. Where needed, a supply list will be sent to registered students and will be available on the ASCH web site.

W-201 Tues/Wed ~ COILING A PINE NEEDLE BASKET ON A GOURD Toni Best

Using a deer antler and pine needles, students will create a beautiful, unique coiled basket on a gourd base. The students will start on a gourd base in order to complete the project in the two days allotted. Incorporating a deer antler into the woven basket adds to its unique beauty.

W-202 Tues/Wed ~ GARMENTS FROM LEFTOVERS Daryl Lancaster

Daryl has been experimenting with scraps of hand-woven fabric. We all have them and can’t bear to throw them away. Innovative ways of piecing, reassembling, and reusing hand-woven leftovers are demonstrated. Participants will bring their sewing machines and some scraps and have some fun! Then comes the best part, using Daryl’s basic vest pattern custom fitted to you, spend the rest of the workshop assembling a vest from leftover parts. Anything goes here, it’s a chance to get really carried away since all you have to lose are a few scraps!

W-203 Tues/Wed ~ SPINNING EXOTIC FIBERS Judith MacKenzie McCuin

Cashmere from Tashkent, alpaca from Peru, silks from China, modern spinners have the world at their finger tips! This class is to help you find your way through this amazing selection. It will cover how to buy, prepare, spin, and design fabrics that use these fibers to their best advantage. The class will look at a wide variety of fibers, including silks, cottons, cashmeres, quiviut, camel, and ramie. So, if you still have that brick of silk and the bag of camel down you got for Christmas three years ago, this might be the class for you. Spinning wheel required.

Materials Fee: $5.00 Level: Students should be able to spin a continuous thread

Class limited to 15 and have working relationship with their wheel.


W- 204 Wed/Thurs ~ WORKING WITH WATER SOLUBLE PLASTIC: Techniques for Creating Unique Textiles from Bits and Pieces Brecia Kralovic-Logan

Taking scraps, bits, strips and pieces you can form an entirely new textile by using a plastic base that dissolves in water. Create design samples: weave, sprinkle, mosaic, collage – new and exciting effects are created with color and texture. From lacy and ethereal to solid and formidable your new textile can be constructed into a garment, worn as a scarf or wrap or used as wall art. Small pieces are arranged and pinned into a plastic sandwich and then machine stitched. Brecia will share her Glory US Wrapture pieces, provide resources and inspire you to unleash your creative muse. Water soluble plastic will be provided. Sewing machine required.

Materials Fee: $5.00 Level: must know how to use their sewing machine and feel adventurous

W- 205 Wed/Thurs ~ SINGING THE BLUES John Marshall

Two days of tempting the blues! We’ll be exploring several methods of applying design to textiles using the new instant indigo and easy to make rice paste. John will bring an abundance of his intricately carved stencils along with a treasure trove of samples illustrating the possibilities.

Materials Fee: $40.00 includes use of equipment, plenty of indigo and other natural dyes and a limited amount of fabric. All levels Class limited to 15


W-206 Thurs/Fri ~ BEGINNING SPINNING Norma Ames

For novice spinners, those who want to refresh their skills and those in other disciplines who would like to know more about new fibers. The class will cover fiber preparation; carding, blending, plying and how to spin for a project. An introduction to some more unusual fibers including cotton, ramie, rayon, soy silk and others. Students will bring a spinning wheel and hand carders.

Materials Fee: $25.00 Novice Level Class limited to 18


W-207 Thurs/Fri ~ WEAVING A CHENILLE SCARF WITH PUFFS Deborah Jarchow

Outstanding effects can be achieved when using both rayon chenille and elastic fibers for differential shrinkage. The class will alternate between lecture and hands-on activity as we discuss the process and then go about weaving the scarves. Students will learn about the characteristics of rayon chenille, some methods to make weaving with it easier, and how to incorporate stretchy fibers into the weaving to create a puff effect in their scarf. Students will bring a 4 shaft loom, the rayon chenille yarn will be provided for the students to use.

Materials Fee: $50.00 All Levels of weaving experience Class limited to 12

W-208 Thurs/Fri ~ GARMENT CONSTRUCTION AND FINISHING TOUCHES

FOR HANDWEAVERS AND OTHER FIBER ARTISTS Daryl Lancaster

A crash course in garment construction, embellishment, piecing, fit, finishing, and all around fun! For weavers or anyone interested in learning to construct great looking and great fitting garments. Learn to be creative with your seam finishes, buttonholes, closures, linings, and embellishment. This is a terrific class for those wanting to learn to sew clothing from their handwoven or other special fabric, as well as for those more experienced wanting polished and professional results. Supply List will include a sewing machine

Materials Fee: $10.00 All Levels Class limited to 20

 


W-209 Thurs/Fri ~ SPINNING NOVELTY YARNS Judith MacKenzie McCuin

Boucle, cables, gimps and Turkish knots, encasement, frosted, beaded, and feathered. If you think that "two-ply fine" or the “homespun” look is what hand spinning is all about, this is the class for you. It’s all about making yarns that are structurally strong but have decidedly unusual surfaces. We’ll also look at yarns with unusual purposes (haven’t you always wanted to make a goat-hair camel’s nose ring?) and we’ll investigate non-typical spinning materials. Spinning wheel required.

Materials Fee: $5.00 Level: Students should be able to spin a continuous thread

Class limited to 15 and have working relationship with their wheel.
