THREE
DAY WORKSHOPS
W-301 Tues/Wed/Thurs
~ FELT VESSELS
AND MASKS:
Exploring
Images And
Forms Sharon
Costello
Felt
offers a great
opportunity for
fiber artists
to work with
three-dimensional
sculptural
forms.
Vessels and masks
are perhaps
the most
universal of these
forms. Learn how
to create
a unique
felt vessel or
mask that
combines
a full range
of innovative
felting
techniques. Start
with a simple “felt
on a ball” technique
to create
the beginning
shape,
covering
it with
layers
of different
colored
wool that
can later
be carved
to reveal
the underlying
colors
and create
patterns
and texture
on the
surface.
When your
piece
is partially
felted,
learn
how to
add additional
surface
design
with wool
and yarns.
Shape
your vessel
or mask
through
a variety
of fulling
methods.
A wide
range
of complex,
organic,
shapes
can be
created
through
controlled
stretching
and shrinking.
Add additional
sculptural
forms
and surface
design
to your
piece,
including
felted
figurative
elements,
leaves,
flowers
and other
abstract
forms.
Combine
these
techniques
with cutting,
carving,
needle-felting
and stitching
to make
the surface
a work
of art!

~ THE BOOK
ARTS FOR
FIBER ARTISTS:
Making
Books and
Boxes Featuring
Your Own
Textiles.
Curt Dornberg
As you make
attractive,
fun books
and boxes
in this workshop,
you will learn
to: (1) sew
and bind pamphlets
and books
of one, two,
or three or
more signatures
using the
appropriate
stitches;
(2) case-in
pamphlets
or text blocks
in hard covers
with a soft
spine and
also with
a flat-back
spine; (3)
construct
a slipcase
and/or a half-clamshell
box to house
a case-bound
book; (4)
construct
a box with
a hinged or
a fitted lid.
In addition,
you will learn
to create
and use book
cloth made
from your
own fabrics,
and you will
receive a
manual of
instructions
including
sources of
information,
tools and
materials
relating to
the book arts.

W-303 Tues/Wed/Thurs
~ CHASING
RAINBOWS
Nancy Finn
In
this workshop
students will
dip small pieces
of silk fabric
(about ½ inch
wide
by 2-1/2
inches
long)
into
dye.
Because
we are
using
silk,
it is
not
necessary
to use
any
dye
chemicals
or to
do any
cooking
of the
fabric.
Of all
the
fibers,
silk
is the
most
thirsty
for
color.
Each
student
will
leave
the
workshop
with
about
eighty
or so
color
samples
that
will
take
them
around
the
color
wheel.
The
dyeing
process
will
also
include
shading
and
toning.
This
will
give
the
student
a thorough
understanding
of how
primaries
work
together
to form
secondaries
and
how
primaries
and
secondaries
work
together
to form
tertiaries.
We will
also
discuss
mixing
stock
solutions,
safety
issues,
color
combining
as in
analogous,
complimentary,
split
complementary
color
schemes.

WEAVING WITH
WIRE AND METALS
Susan
McGehee
Participants
will learn
that wire
has many similarities
to yarn and
is easier
to weave than
they thought.
A variety
of wires and
metals will
be used to
create a 3-inch
wide, 72-inch
long sampler.
Techniques
on how to
handle metals
on the loom,
sources of
materials
and a history
of woven metals
will be discussed.
Everyone will
go home with
a positive
attitude towards
using wire
on the loom,
a sampler
and a metal
neckpiece.
Students
will provide
a sturdy
table loom
or portable
floor
loom with
at least 4
shafts (8
shafts preferable).
Small,
light metal
looms are
not heavy
enough to
be successful with
wire.

learn three
coiling stitches,
the figure
8 stitch,
the lazy
stitch and
mariposa stitch.
Discover the
secrets of
making a lid

(note
days) ~ TAPESTRY
TO
GO Kathy Spoering
A
small format tapestry
workshop,
in which
each student will
complete
at least one
small
piece. I have
found that using
the medium
of tapestry
to ‘journal’ my
travels
has resulted
in fun
small
pieces
that immediately
take me
back to
a time
and place.
Students
will learn
to capture
a scene
and make
it weave-able
by reducing
it to
its most
basic
visual
elements.
Students
need a

(Instructor
can supply
